Old photo emerges of Alexis Sanchez wearing a Man United jacket as a teenager

The Chilean has said he always dreamed of playing for United

Christmas has come late for Man United fans.

Yesterday their club confirmed the signing of a world-class player from a long-time rival for precisely zero pounds.

Out-of-favour Henrikh Mkhitaryan was sent down to London in return with many now hoping Alexis Sanchez will return United’s No7 shirt to its former glory.

In his first interview as an Old Trafford resident, the Chilean superstar said: “Since I was a young lad I’ve always said that my dream was to play for Manchester United.

“And I’m not just saying that because I’m here now.

“I always said as a kid that I’d like to play for United and I once spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about it.

“We chatted for around 20 minutes. And I told him that my dream was to come here to Manchester United.”

He really hammered the point home.

And if this old photo is anything to go by, it would seem his affection for the club is genuine…

That’s a teenage Alexis Sanchez wearing a Man United jacket.

A sight to savour for the Old Trafford faithful.

Although, there is some evidence that his enthusiasm may be somewhat exaggerated.

In an interview with Arsenal Media, he once said: “At the age of ten, I hadn’t got much of a clue about the world of football or clubs.

“I just knew I loved playing. We didn’t have a television so I spent the whole day playing football.”

It’s entirely possible his love affair with United started later in life, as the photo of him in the jacket suggests, but Sanchez’s interviews do seem to contradict each other.

Anyway, none of it really matters.

At the end of the day he’s signed for United and will play with a burning desire to win, as he always has done.

Right now United fans have every right to feel as smug as possible.
