Last summer Everton splashed the cash.
Gylfi Sigurdsson, Sandro Ramirez, Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Davy Klaassen were all signed for notable transfer fees as excitement and expectation reached a peak among fans.
However, the Toffees underwhelmed in the first third of the season with Ronald Koeman paying the ultimate price.
With Sam Allardyce now at helm, the club are spending big once again as they hope to build a squad capable of competing for a European spot next season.
Having already spent £45million on Cenk Tosun and Theo Walcott, Everton are now targeting Bayern Munich defender Juan Bernat.
33-year-old Leighton Baines is not far off becoming an indie frontman full-time and Big Sam wants a new first-choice left-back.
Cuco Martina has looked vulnerable at times in that position this season.
Bernat has only played two Bundesliga games this season and has been a squad player at Bayern since signing from Valencia in 2014.
The 24-year-old has seven Spain caps to his name but hasn’t played for his country since 2015.
Goodison Park may be the perfect platform for him to relaunch his career.
Also capable of playing in midfield, Bernat was highly-rated a few seasons ago, featuring in several ‘top youngsters to watch out for’ listicles.
Three and half seasons in Munich would have instilled in him an elite mentality which he may be able to transmit to an Everton squad somewhat struggling for identity.
There are no estimates yet regarding the transfer fee but the Liverpool Echo are reporting Allardyce is keen on a move this month.
