Ahh squad numbers. The gift that keeps on giving.
A fresh transfer window presents new opportunities for players to get people talking with their selection of squad number.
Step forward Landon Donovan. Yep, he’s still playing.
The 35-year-old has signed for Mexican side Club Leon following spells at Bayer Leverkusen, San Jose Earthquakes, LA Galaxy, Bayern Munich and Everton.
Now comes the squad number debate.
Donovan will wear the no.20 at Leon, with many supporters, particularly those of Mexico and USA, believing it’s a nod to ‘dos a cero’.
The ‘dos a cero’ rivalry in question relates to the games between Mexico and USA from 2001 to 2013.
Mexico won all their home encounters 2-0, hence the ‘dos (two) a zero’ nickname.
Donovan started three of those games and, as a 157-cap American playing in Mexico, has experience of both sides of the rivalry.
Speaking on his choice of squad number, Donovan told a press conference: ” It’s not a joke.
“The biggest joke is that Mexico are in the World Cup and we aren’t.”
Someone needs to explain to Donovan how jokes work.
