Lukasz Piszczek must have had a good New Year’s Eve celebration.
He had a lot of reason to.
Although Borussia Dortmund had a year of mixed fortunes, Piszczek made a very remarkable personal achievement.
Dortmund finished last season behind the new kids on the block RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and got rid of Thomas Tuchel three days after winning the German cup.
Peter Bosz was appointed to take the team forward and led them to the top of the league this season, but that was before Jupp Heynckes got involved.
Since then Bosz has been given the chop and Dortmund have slipped down to third in the table – 13 points behind Bayern Munich.
Piszczek, however rode all the ups and downs of the club in 2017 and came out with a gleaming record.
He didn’t lose a single league game for the whole calendar year.
Not only was he unbeaten in the league ll year, he played 20 games, winning 15 and drawing five.
There were three Bayern players who played more than 10 games and achieved the feat in Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm and Douglas Costa.
But it’s always easier when you’re playing at FC Hollywood.
Piszczek is one of Poland’s best players and has been a mainstay at Dortmund, making 187 appearances since he signed for them in 2010.
2017 was the year that calendar year records became a thing.
Both Paul Pogba and Harry Kane had equally impressive ‘calendar year records’.
Congratulations all round.
