The weird and wonderful world of players who’ve scored just one Premier League goal

There are 482 players with one Premier League goal to their name, so we've delved into the data to pick out the best (or worst)

What do Pierluigi Casiraghi, Zheng Zhi and Gabriel Heinze have in common?

They’ve all scored goals in the Premier League. Well, not quite.

They are three of the 482 players to have scored just one goal in the Premier League. Just one, solitary goal. No more, no less.

Now obviously none of us have got the time to go through all 482, so we’ve picked out some of the best (or worst).

No currently active Premier League players have been included, which is good news for the Henri Saivets of this world.

Without further ado…

One and counting

The one in ones

A 1:1 ratio is the sign of an elite striker, especially in the Premier League.

So spare a thought for Gary Bull, Chris David, Aidan Newhouse and Josh Harrop who all scored in their only Premier League appearance.

Dutch midfielder David is now at Eredivise side FC Utrecht while Harrop joined Preston weeks after becoming Man United’s 100th different Premier League goalscorer.

The Glovesmen

Goalkeepers Brad Friedel, Tim Howard, Paul Robinson and Peter Schmeichel all scored as many Premier League goals as World Cup winner Stephane Guivarc’h.

Schmeichel was something of a regular goalscorer, finding the back of the net on ten occasions during his career, although only one came in the English top flight.

But our favourite goalkeeping goalscorer was Robinson, who beat Ben Foster from all of 70-yards, via plenty of wind and a bounce.

Why don’t goalkeepers shoot more often?

The 250 club

You’d think after playing 250 Premier League games you would have scored more than one goal thanks to the law of averages.

Not for Claus Lundekvam. The former Southampton defender holds the ‘honour’ of being the only player to feature in 250 plus Premier League games without scoring more than one goal.

John Obi Mikel jumped ship one short of his 250th game, clearly aware of the looming landmark.

The ‘I forgot he played in the Premier League’

Marko Marin. Nuri Sahin. Alexandre Pato. Valeri Bojinov. Giuseppe Rossi. Alberto Aquilani. Albert Luque. Estaban Granero. Helder Postiga. We could go on.

All players who, at one point in time, were destined for greatness, only to be eaten up by the relentless churn of the Premier League.

Will Bernardo Silva follow suit?

The genuine legends

Legend isn’t a word that should be thrown around at random.

But where Henrik Larsson, Edgar Davids and Bastian Schweinsteiger are concerned nothing else will really do.

We’re tempted to throw Hidetoshi Nakata, Marco Materazzi and Jaap Stam in to the mix as well. Tal Ben Haim? Not so much.
