ART ATTACK

A football statue of Michael Essien has just been made that’s worse than Cristiano Ronaldo’s and Diego Maradona’s put together

2018 has started where 2017 ended in terms of terrible football statues

Michael Essien must have really been hoping the sculptures would get this one right.

He had seen what had happened when the tributes to Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Maradona were unveiled.

Surely the curse of the amazingly bad football statue couldn’t strike for the third time in a row, could it?

It’s like he’s in the room

We’re sorry Michael but the new figure in tribute to your brilliant Chelsea career does no one any favours.

The statue is a delight of metallic colours, wacky angles and an almost unrecognisable face.

Essien made 168 appearances for the Blues and the Black Star international was duly honoured in the city of Kumasi, Ghana.

But without being told who the statue is of and the location you would be forgiven for not knowing it was Essien.

Let’s start with the pose he is making.

It looks completely unnatural for a footballer to be in this position with his legs crossed and the ball at his feet.

The resemblance is uncanny

Then you come onto his huge torso and a slight bit of belly bulging his shirt at the waist line.

Finally, the metallic creation’s depiction of Essien’s face is a thing of pure beatuy.

The artwork is clearly skillful but the likeness to the real thing is very questionable.

Don’t worry Essien, you are in good company when it comes to bad sculptures.
