You might have thought firework-related injuries were over after November 5.
But Argentine striker Lucas Viatri has payed the price for messing around with fireworks during the festive period.
Viatri, who has been capped three times for Argentina, suffered severe injuries to his face, as photos shared by Uruguayan journalist Roberto Moar show.
Argentine website Infobae reported that Viatri was hit directly in the face by the ominously named torta.
The 30-year-old, who plays for Uruguayan side Penarol, is now back in Buenos Aires and faces months out recovering from his injuries.
But further disaster was avoided as Viatri still has his sight.
A Penarol statement read: “Lucas Viatri suffered an accident with pyrotechnics that affected both eyes.
“He is in Buenos Aires, where he is resting and examinations are being carried out to establish the relevant treatment.”
Good to hear.
Mario Balotelli famously started a fire in his own house after setting off a box of fireworks.
But he ended up becoming Manchester’s ambassador for fireworks safety off the back of it, so it wasn’t all bad news.
Maybe he can give Viatri a couple of tips on how to firework safely.
