We don’t want to be too hard on him.
Joe Gomez nearly cost Liverpool points with a lack of concentration again.
The Reds nearly drew with Burnley only for Ragnar Klavan to score a late winner and keep up the pressure in the race for the top four.
Gomez owes Klavan extra Christmas presents because he dug the young man out of a hole after the 20-year-old was caught napping at a cross again.
Remember when Liverpool played Arsenal in that crazy 3-3 draw at the Emirates before Christmas?
Well it was Gomez’ slip in concentration that allowed Alexis Sanchez to get in front of him at the back post and steal in for the header.
Now he has repeated exactly the same mistake against Burnley and it nearly cost his side two valuable points.
It has been a characteristic of Liverpool all season that they will concede and with sloppy defending like this a 1-0 win is never a safe score.
Gomez was at the back post again and was caught ball watching as a cross was delivered from the left.
He stands still in the six yard box when the ball is flicked on and at this level that kind of play gets punished.
Johan Gudmunsson springs past him on the outside and buries a diving header into the back of the net.
The Clarets couldn’t hold in truly awful conditions as Sadio Mane grabbed a late winner with a thunderbolt on his left foot.
Gomez will learn but if he is going to make up part of a defence that wants to challenge for titles he needs to fix this part of his game.
Don’t worry Joe, you’ve got plenty of time.
