Just minutes earlier, Palace captain Scott Dann was carried off on a stretcher after several minutes treatment on the pitch.

The Eagles centre-back left the pitch to sympathetic applause from both sets of fans.

Jesus’ first season at City was marred by injury after he broke his metatarsal in February.

He missed two-and-a-half months and needed crutches to help him recover.

The injury comes as a huge blow to boss Guardiola, although many fans believe Jesus’ expected absence will ensure the signing of Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal’s Chilean superstar is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a January move to the champions elect.

Guardiola hinted he is in the market for new players after admitting he fears his squad cannot cope with the pressure of competing in four different competitions.

He said: “I am worried. I am worried about that.

“To handle four competitions, I don’t know who will be able to do that.

“When I am talking about titles in December, you have to be careful with the schedule.

“So I am worried because we can not play every three days, now we have the league, then FA Cup, then Carabao Cup. Bristol, be careful, they have taken out four Premier League teams. Something is going on there.”
