When Francesco Totti speaks everyone should listen.
The Roma legend who racked up 619 appearances for the club over a 25-year career has lifted the lid on who he believes is better out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Totti was at the top of world football for longer than 20 years and he should know a thing or two about amazing strikers.
So let’s concede to his greater knowledge in one of the most hotly contested debates football has ever seen.
Messi and Ronaldo have both won the Ballon d’Or five times and the axis of power has swung season by season as the pair strive to be recognised as the world’s best.
This year it was the Real Madrid man’s turn as he scooped the glamorous trophy.
However, this season Messi has been on another planet and left Ronny licking his wounds in the shadows as Barcelona opened up a 14-point league lead over their rivals.
Last Saturday saw the two meet in El Clasico and it was without doubt Messi who performed better out of the two.
But what does Totti think?
As a number 10 himself, and a player who first breeched the lines between the midfield and strikers it was always going to be pretty clear which side he fell on.
He told a sport conference in Dubai: “Messi is number one, just don’t tell Cristiano!”
There you have it Messi is the best footballer to ever grace the pitch.
Well until another legend says its Ronaldo.
As you were.
- Man City do not have the longest active winning streak in football
- Shinji Kagawa is absolutely savage
- Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose won the darts with these signs
