They said he was washed up.
They said he should go play in China.
Some even said he should hang up his boots and call it a day.
But Wayne Rooney has once again proved his doubters wrong.
The five-time Premier League champion has scored nine league goals so far this season — the same as Alvaro Morata, Raheem Sterling and Romelu Lukaku.
Not only that, he’s been ruthlessly effective.
Rooney’s conversion rate of 37.5% is the best in Europe’s top five leagues.
And even if you discount penalties, a third of his shots have resulted in a goal.
Radamel Falcao and Real Betis’ Antonio Sanabria are the equal second deadliest marksmen, each with a conversion rate of 33.33%.
Mauro Icardi and Edinson Cavani are next on the list — both the Inter Milan forward and the PSG hitman have conversion rates just over 30%.
In terms of the Premier League, Jamie Vardy, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Charlie Austin share a 25% success rate, but all are left trailing in Rooney’s wake.
