News flash – spending the best part of £350m on your strike force doesn’t make you invincible.
PSG have suffered two damaging defeats in the space of four days, and it’s all very encouraging for the rest of Europe.
Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe may be torturing defences on a weekly basis but Bayern Munich showed the big boys are more than a match for the big spenders.
After their fans pelted the French club’s players with fake money, their players gave them an eye-opening lesson during the 3-1 win in the Champions League.
And other sides should be taking note.
PSG’s front three may be menacing going forward but they offer next to nothing defensively, something Bayern exploited brilliantly.
With a delicious display of wonderful wing play.
The German champions can boast two of the finest wing back/wing combinations in world football, with both flanks bursting with world class talent.
On Tuesday night they started with Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman on the right and David Alaba and Franck Ribery on the left.
Coman and Ribery swapped sides throughout, but as a four they gave PSG full backs Dani Alves and Layvin Kurzawa nightmares throughout.
At the same time, both wingers worked equally hard to double up on Neymar and Mbappe when the French side were attacking.
It’s no coincidence all three of Bayern’s goals at the Allianz Arena were created from wide, with Corentin Tolisso’s Frank Lampard-like runs finishing off two tantalising crosses.
In heavyweight encounters like these, PSG are too top heavy and were naive to think they could survive without cover for their exposed defenders.
Alves especially will be having nightmares about Coman’s performance for a while, particularly after the Frenchman left him for dead for Tolisso’s second goal.
This was also a Bavarian side without Arturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara, Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer.
The contest may have been a dead rubber on paper, but the result could have lasting implications for PSG’s future opponents.
