January transfer window: Why 2018 could be the best for years

The January transfer window is fast approaching with a number of big name players itching for a move

Remember the 2011 January transfer window?

We were rather spoilt by moves for the likes of Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Fernando Torres and David Luiz on dramatic last day of action.

And it hasn’t really been the same since, with fans understandably struggling to get excited about a Robert Huth loan move.

But 2018 looks like bringing the good times back.

Why? Well silly season is entering full swing with the January transfer window rapidly approaching – and it’s shaping up to be the most intriguing for years.

World Cup year

International football might not have the glitz and glitter it used to, but it remains the pinnacle of all professional careers.

So to miss out on a major tournament contention because of a lack of regular game time would be a huge sucker punch and a major low point in a player’s career.

A number of big names fall into that category – and will use January to pursue moves to help boost their chances.

Daniel Sturridge isn’t exactly Jurgen Klopp’s cup of tea at Liverpool, especially when you consider the form of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane this season.

Sturridge is well down the pecking order at Liverpool

The Reds striker, as a result, was left out of Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squads, with youth promoted at the expense of suspect injury records.

In recent weeks whispers have suggested Sturridge will seek a January exit, maybe to West Ham or Southampton, in a bid to force his way back into recognition.

The same applies to Olivier Giroud.

Giroud has been told he needs to move elsewhere by Didier Deschamps

According to Telefoot, Didier Deschamps has told the Arsenal striker he needs to play more regularly to maintain his place in the French squad.

Giroud has been displaced by compatriot Alexandre Lacazette this season and a loan move to Everton has been mooted.

And the list goes on.

The likes of Danny Rose, Luke Shaw and Jack Wilshere are all in the same boat and will look to January as their potential for World Cup salvation.

Free contract frenzy

In this day and age, losing a prize player for absolutely nothing is almost sacrilege.

Too bad then that an embarrassment of world class talent is available for free next summer.

That means those out-of-contract stars are free to open negotiations in January with clubs outside of their current league.

It’s common knowledge that Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have been stalling on renewing their elapsing Arsenal deals for some time.

“Arsene smells”

And on the continent it’s no different, with the likes of Arjen Robben, Giorgio Chiellini and Leon Goretzka all out of contract in the summer.

Schalke star Goretzka is wanted by just about every European heavyweight around and claimed this week he will make a decision next month as to where his future lies.

We’ve witnessed some incredible ‘Bosman’ deals down the years – we’re looking at you Andrea Pirlo and Robert Lewandowski – so will any follow suit in January?

Could Goretzka be the next great free transfer?

Transfer news has surrendered some of it’s attraction in recent years, but the next eight weeks or so promises some genuinely satisfying deals.

So sit back, relax and wait for the moves to come rolling in…
