Hear that? Listen closely.
That’s the sound of millions of Barcelona fans breathing a heavy sigh of relief.
Lionel Messi has signed a new contract at Barcelona which will keep him at the Nou Camp until 2021.
As of 1 January clubs would have been able to talk to Messi about making a free transfer away from Barcelona.
But Messi’s new contract should put an end to that speculation, with the 30-year-old stating that he wants to finish his career at the club.
Now, we know what your thinking.
Contracts mean nothing when you’ve got Man City and PSG throwing their financial weight around.
But Messi’s contract contains a £626million buyout clause, more than three times the price PSG paid for Neymar in the summer.
Barcelona’s club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “The buyout clause had to be modified, and it has gone from 300mil euros to 700m euros.”
Messi is the all-time La Liga top-scorer, with 361 goals and counting while he’s only the third player to rack up more than 600 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions.
He’s won eight league titles and four Champions League trophies as well as countless other team and individual honours since making his debut for the club.
Come to think of it, £626m would be a steal.
