USA want to host their own World Cup-style tournament for teams who failed to qualify

A host of big names have failed to reach this summer's World Cup, including Italy, Chile and the Netherlands

We imagine it’s pretty disappointing when your country fails to reach the World Cup. 

The last time England did was in 1978 – well before I was born.

But I was very much alive when we failed in our bid to go to Euro 2008 – and it wasn’t great.

And there’s a host of big teams that won’t going to the upcoming World Cup in Russia this summer – including Italy, Chile, Ghana and the Netherlands.

Another big name who won’t be competing is the US, who lost to Trinidad and Tobago in their final group game back in October, allowing Panama to take their place.

But it seems our friends across the pond are looking to fill the void with their very own tournament, according to reports in USA Today.

The United States Soccer Federation are reportedly looking to host their own exhibition tournament for teams that didn’t qualify for the World Cup.

It is not clear whether FIFA would actually allow exhibition games to be played during the World Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 15.

But if it does go ahead, and if they were to include teams such as China and India, then the exhibition tournament could potentially be viewed by more people than the World Cup.

Now there’s a thought.
