Dimitar Berbatov is one of football’s renowned King’s of Cool.
Well remembered for his technical ability and composure on the ball, the Bulgarian won two Premier League titles with Manchester United and enjoyed spells with Tottenham and Fulham during his eight-year stay in England.
He even picked up the Premier League Golden Boot in 2010–11.
Now playing for Indian side Kerala Blasters, the towering striker has also turned out for the likes of CSKA Sofia, Bayer Leverkusen, Greek side PAOK and even Ligue 1 giants Monaco.
And in a recent interview with ESPN, Berbatov revealed what it was like to meet Man United’s man-of-the-moment Anthony Martial when the pair were together at Monaco.
Recalling his first training session at the club, Berbatov said: “I saw Anthony Martial, James Rodriguez, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yannick Carrasco, Bernardo Silva.
“These young players were flying around me and I was thinking: ‘What the f***? I am too old or are these guys too good.”
He goes onto describe the French winger – who scored a late winner for United against Tottenham on Saturday – as “something special” but lacking in confidence.
He said: “You could see how fast and strong he was. The only thing lacking was to be more confident.
“Martial would come towards with me the ball, and sometimes he hesitated.
“He didn’t want to take me on because he thought I was going to take his ball. The self-belief was not there.
“I would say: “Anto, you are so quick, you can go past me. Don’t be afraid to do that to every player because you are so quick.” He’s a top guy.”
Considering some of the wonderful goals the Tony’s scored since his record-breaking transfer to United, Berb’s words seemingly did the trick.
