These are the three centre-backs on Barcelona’s transfer shortlist for January

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is said to be the Catalan giants' primary target

Barcelona are in the market for a new centre-back.

Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti have the first-team places locked down but with Javier Mascherano slowly succumbing to the sands of time and Thomas Vermaelen yet to convince, the Catalan giants want to recruit for the future.

And according to Corriere Dello Sport, Ernesto Valverde has compiled a three-man shortlist of defenders with January in mind.

First up there’s 18-year-old French international Dan-Axel Zagadou.

The teenager escaped PSG’s second team in the summer and signed for Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga club’s policy of trusting in youth has meant Zagadou has featured in eight games this season.

At 6ft 5in tall, he’s a physically imposing figure and is capable of playing at left-back as well as in the centre of defence.

Lyon defender Mouctar Diakhaby is also reportedly on Barcelona’s radar.

The 20-year-old France Under-21 star played 34 games for the Ligue 1 club last season, chipping in with five goals.

Like Zagadou, Diakhaby’s primary attributes are his height and strength though he is comfortable with the ball at his feet as well — a must-have trait for any potential Barcelona player.

However, Barca’s alleged primary target is Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 26-year-old Napoli centre-back is considerably more established than the other two players of the shortlist.

The Senegal defender has been key to Napoli’s improvement in recent years and was a target for Chelsea in the summer.

If Barcelona were to sign Koulibaly he would surely be expected to compete for a place in the starting XI straight away.

You would think he would also demand a much higher transfer fee than the inexperienced duo of Zagadou and Diakhaby.
