They don’t make them like Nemanja Vidic anymore.
The Manchester United icon is a rare breed who will go down in history as one of the finest defenders to ever grace the Premier League.
Vidic’s win-at-all-costs, die hard attitude endeared him to Manchester United fans and he emphasised his unrivalled commitment to the cause in an interview with The Sunday Times over the weekend.
Speaking to Jonathan Northcroft, when Vidic was asked about his attitude to injuries and pain, specifically broken noses, he smiled.
“Pride. You can fix your nose,” smirked the Serbian.
“But if you let somebody score the goal your pride cannot be fixed.”
That could genuinely be a quote from the movie Gladiator.
Vidic, who retired last year after finishing his career at Inter Milan, felt he had to go the extra mile to physically compete with the best around.
He added: “If you looked closely on the pitch you’d have seen others were bigger than me.
“But I understood this: that if I was going to win a challenge I had to go 150%: not 80%, not 90%, 150%.
“That’s mental strength: ‘I don’t like to do it but I have to do it.'”
Vidic had a tough start to life in England but he went onto win five Premier League titles and the Champions League at United after forming a famous partnership with Rio Ferdinand.
