As expected, Cristtiano Ronaldo was crowned the best male player in the world by the FIFA the Best awards last night.
Lionel Messi and Neymar finished second and third respectively in a controversy-free podium.
The really interesting part comes when you breakdown the voting.
Managers, team captains and the media of footballing nations ranked three names each for the Men’s Players of the Year gong.
Players voted first received five points, three points and one point depending on whether they were placed first, second or third.
Here’s how the voting looked…
The award-winner voted for Real Madrid team-mates Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo.
Argentina captain and runner-up Messi followed suit by picking Barcelona pals Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta and ex-team-mate Neymar.
Manager Gareth Southgate controversially snubbed five-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, in favour of Ronaldo, with Real Madrid midfielders Luka Modric and Toni Kroos coming in after their team-mate.
Three Lions captain of the time Jordan Henderson went with a more conventional vote of Ronaldo, Messi and Luis Suarez.
Then-boss Gordon Strachan inexplicably left out Ronaldo, choosing Modric, N’Golo Kante and Messi.
Skipper Scott Brown did not share the same opinion as his gaffer and picked Ronaldo, followed by Messi and Neymar.
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
Martin O’Neill included Eden Hazard in his pick, but opted for Ronaldo and Messi ahead of the Belgian.
Seamus Coleman’s first two picks mirrored his boss’ but he voted for Juventus ace Paulo Dybala ahead of Hazard.
Michael O’Neill also gave top marks to Ronaldo, with Chelsea pair Hazard and Kante following.
Steven Davis voted for Ronaldo, Messi and Modric.
Dragons head coach Chris Coleman disregarded both Ronaldo and Messi and instead opted for Sergio Ramos, Modric and England’s Harry Kane.
There was no vote by Wales’ captain.
