Zinedine Zidane reponds to Gary Lineker’s ’embarrassing’ criticism of Karim Benzema

The Match of the Day and BT Sport pundit called the Real Madrid forward 'a tad overrated' earlier this week

Gary Lineker is just as prolific on Twitter as he was on the pitch.

The BBC and BT Sport pundit caused quite a stir in midweek when he labelled Karim Benzema ‘overrated’ as he watched Real Madrid draw 1-1 at home to Spurs.

The comment came in the wake of Hugo Lloris’ superb save to deny Benzema a headed goal from no further than two yards out.

Lineker copped plenty of criticism from Real Madrid fans online and a fair bit from the Spanish media as well.

Now Zinedine Zidane has responded to Britain’s most notorious crisp-flogger…

‘Embarrassing’ — ouch.

For what it’s worth we’re siding with Zizou on this one.

While there are more clinical goalscorers in world football, Benzema’s overall contribution to the team and natural chemistry with Cristiano Ronaldo has been key to Los Blancos’ success in recent times.

Perhaps this is a case of contrasting views on the role of a No9.

Lineker excelled in the role of the selfish poacher who was only concerned with scoring goals, whereas Benzema acts as one third of a cohesive front line.

The Frenchman should be measured in more than just goals.

In fairness, Lineker talks more sense than most when it comes to football but on this occasion we (and I include Zidane in that) will have to respectfully disagree with his opinion.
