Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte spent the summer avoiding the advances of Chelsea and Man City.
But while the 23-year-old might not have moved club, he is considering an international move this summer.
Laporte has opened the door to a switch to play for Spain, despite being born in France.
“I have always said that my country is France, but if I am not selected then there is an alternative,” the defender told L’Equipe.
“I have been in Spain for eight years and I will play for them if they are interested.”
Has anyone checked if he’s got an English grandmother?
Laporte clearly has one eye on the World Cup next summer.
France can call upon Raphael Varane, Laurent Koscielny, Samuel Umtiti, Presnel Kimpembe, Kurt Zouma, Adil Rami, Lucas Hernandez and Malang Sarr in the middle of defence.
Now that’s just being greedy.
Laporte has been called up to the France squad under Didier Deschamps but he’s yet to make an appearance for the senior side.
Spain’s defensive options aren’t quite as rich.
Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique are undisputed first-choice picks but behind them are Nacho, who rarely starts for Real Madrid, and Marc Bartra.
So you can’t blame Laporte, who has 19 caps for France’s Under-21 side, for assessing his options.
