Fewer players will have as much weight on their shoulders next summer as Mohamed Salah.
The 25-year-old is the standout star of Egyptian football and as a result is tasked with ensuring the country’s first World Cup since 1990 is a relative success.
Egypt is a football-mad country and so it’s almost impossible to underestimate the levels of hero worship Salah receives back home.
His heroics against Congo, in which he scored twice to ensure World Cup qualification, sparked joyous scenes in Cairo and prompted thousands of Mo Salah appreciation social media posts.
However, some believed the Liverpool winger’s exploits deserved a proper gift.
Mamdouh Abbas, former president of Egyptian Premier League club Zamalek, contacted Salah in the aftermath of the victory to congratulate him.
Abbas also offered his compatriot a luxurious holiday villa as a reward.
Salah, being the top bloke he is, respectfully declined and said he would appreciate a donation to his hometown of Nagrig in Gharbiya province instead.
Salah’s former school in Nagrig has already been renamed in his honour and the local youth centre is set to follow suit.
