Imagine if your team got knocked out of the cup like this.
Four weeks ago Dutch side FC Lisse beat minnows HSV Hoek in KNVB Cup in a penalty shootout.
The third-tier side beat their fifth-tier opponents 5-4 after the two teams remained level at the end of extra-time.
All seemed present and correct.
However, the Dutch FA ruled that the referee in charge had incorrectly implemented the ABBA format — the new system in place on these shores.
The governing body subsequently ruled that the penalty shootout was to be replayed using the traditional ABAB format.
You can probably tell what happened next…
Last week the teams returned to Lisse’s ground for ten minutes of action.
This time the hosts lost 6-5 and were therefore eliminated from the cup while HSV Hoek were effectively re-instated.
Needless to say the referee who made the original error is not a popular figure in Lisse these days.
