It’s one of football’s greatest mysteries.
Why do left-footed players appear that little bit more classy than their right-footed counterparts?
There’s something about the lazy swing of a left foot that warms the cockles of a football fan’s heart and Rio Ferdinand is no exception.
The Man United legend started a debate on social media ahead of the return of Champions League football my declaring the five players he believes to be the best southpaws of all time.
These are his selections…
Legendary Argentine pair Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi join Rivaldo, Hristo Stoichtov and Ryan Giggs in Ferdinand’s top five.
Not bad but you’re probably thinking the same thing we are… where the hell is Robbie Brady?
Other players who were suggested in the replies to Ferdinand’s tweet include: Roberto Carlos, Chris Waddle, Paolo Maldini, Alvaro Recoba, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Shinsuke Nakamura among others.
It sort of depends whether Rio means best five players who are left-footed or best left foots.
Maldini is arguably the greatest defender of all time but his left foot wasn’t as cultured as a free-kick specialist such as Nakamura or Recoba, though .
Either way it’s a fun debate and one relatively free of the toxic trolling that ruins most online discussions of football.
