Irish superstars U2 – who are currently on the South American leg of their Joshua Tree Tour – were lucky enough to play in front of a fevered Buenos Aires crowd who’d just watched Argentina qualify for next summer’s World Cup.

The band made sure they had the stadium’s full attention from the get-go, by opting to delay their show by two hours so fans could watch Lionel Messi and friends secure their place in Russia next year.

Playing in front of 53,000 fans at the giant La Plata Stadium, Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. decided to wait until full-time before playing their set, with Noel Gallagher – the band’s support act – opening up ahead of the two-hour break.

Speaking to Argentinian paper La Nacion ahead of the show, the tour’s producer Daniel Grinbank said: “Can you imagine what the show’s going to be like if Argentina wins?”

“And if we lose, at least we can get rid of the bitterness with a great show.

“You can’t go wrong.”
