We were all a little bit emotional when Xabi Alonso called time on his illustrious playing career at the end of last season.
The King of Cool – who won virtually everything on offer at club and international level, including the Champions League (twice) and the World Cup – hung up his boots in May at the age of 35, having enjoyed spells at Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Of course, it wasn’t long after he announced his retirement that we all wondered what the midfield genius would do next.
Surely his natural next step would be into the world of management?
After all, he looks cool in a suit.
Well, that’s exactly what he’s going to do, having announced he’s taking charge of the newly-formed adidas football team Tango Squad FC.
Haven’t heard of them?
According to the adidas website, Tango Squad is made up of ‘creative grassroots influencers and trialists’ from across multiple cities all over Europe, with the team’s progress set to be captured as part of a documentary series that launches on Monday 16 October.
The concept was set up by adidas in 2016, with the teenagers already gatecrashing training sessions with Real Madrid.

Ah, it’s good to have you back, Xabi!
