Real Madrid full-back Dani Carvajal could be set for a lengthy spell on sidelines, after being diagnosed with a viral infection of the heart.
According to Madrid-based news outlet Marca, the Spain international will be out ‘indefinitely’ with a condition affecting his pericardium.
This is a huge blow for Carvajal, who has played more minutes than any other Real Madrid player this season.
Marca say Carvajal’s problem requires a period of rest to recover and, in principle, it could be at least a month and a half before he returns.
The 25-year-old is also expected to miss Spain’s upcoming World Cup qualifying games.
They play Albania and Israel, during which time his heart condition will be monitored.
The La Liga club announced the news on their website with a statement that read:
“Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal, he has been diagnosed with a viral pericardium infection. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

“12/1 on a 3-1 away win is very tempting.”
Carvajal, who recently signed a contract extension at Real until June 2022, has played 167 times for the Spanish club.
He has won the Champions League three times along with La Liga and Copa del Rey titles.
With Theo and Marcelo also injured, there is a real problem for the Los Blancos defence.
