It sometimes feels like there isn’t enough paper in the world to write down all the stories of Gazza’s antics as a player.
The legendary England midfielder’s on and off-field escapades have been stuff of legend for decades, but it doesn’t stop new ones emerging every so often.
So we were delighted to hear another anecdote from the Gazza back catalogue being brought to the fore by none other than ex-Spurs team-mate Darren Anderton.
Anderton appeared on the excellent Quickly Kevin, Will He Score? podcast and was able to confirm a story that has seemingly doing the rounds amongst Spurs fans for years, involving Gazza, Steve Sedgley, and a urinal cake.
The tale goes that when both Gazza and Steve Sedgley were together at Spurs, Gazza once bet Sedgley £20 to eat a urinal cake.
Sedgley did it, Gazza duly wrote him a cheque for £20, and Sedgley then ate the cheque as well.
Anderton said the story was genuinely true, before adding: “Sedg was a good guy. A bit of a lunatic, and as a two [Gazza and Sedgley] they would have been a bit of a nightmare.
“I heard all the stories of them two together and saw Sedg’s behaviour first hand.”
When asked by comedian Josh Widdicombe what Anderton saw Sedgley do first hand, he said: “All sorts… he used to like to eat things, put it that way.
“I’ve seen him eat everything. He wouldn’t eat worms, but he was quite happy standing around with a couple of them hanging out of his mouth.
“He was nuts, but a great guy to have around.”
