As defensive auditions go, conceding five goals against potential employers isn’t a great start.
But Pep Guardiola saw enough of Benjamin Mendy during Monaco’s 5-3 loss to Man City at the Etihad to make him the world’s most expensive defender.
Monaco eventually went through on aggregate in the round of 16 Champions League tie but Mendy’s mind was made up.
He told The Times how a rather unlikely setting helped decide his future.
“After the game at the Etihad I was in anti-doping control with Kevin De Bruyne and had the opportunity then to ask him lots of questions,” the Frenchman said.
“I knew at that point it was going to be my destination.
“And yes, Kevin asked me straight – ‘When are you coming to join us?’ And I said, ‘As soon as they come and ask for me!'”
Mendy, who is quickly becoming a Premier League cult hero for the social media ages, also gave an insight into his running battle with fellow full-back Kyle Walker.
The 23-year-year old said: “Every time I get in my car I sit and sift through pictures and I saw that one of Kyle looking like he’d been taken down by a sniper against Liverpool.
So I stuck it on Twitter but then Kyle got me back. I got nutmegged against Feyenoord in the Champions League so he put a picture of that out and told me, ‘There you go. 1-1. Right back at you’.”
So who’s going to come out on top?
