The squad number Diego Costa is likely to wear when he officially re-signs for Atletico Madrid

Spaniard completed a £57m switch from Chelsea this week and is set to be unveied before Sevilla clash

Diego Costa will commence his third spell with Atletico Madrid in January.

Chelsea’s top scorer last season has sealed a £57million switch but cannot be registered until the new year due to the La Liga club’s transfer ban.

And it’s likely Costa will wear No18 upon his return to the Spanish capital.

The bullish forward’s favoured No19, his number during his second spell at the Atleti and with Chelsea and Spain, is currently occupied by defender Lucas Hernandez.

Atletico’s No19 has a proud recent history with Jose Antonio Reyes and Koke wearing it prior to Costa and Fernando Torres donning it upon his return in 2014.

Torres has since reclaimed the No9 shirt and the No18 is the best available number at the club.

Costa was told he did not feature in Antonio Conte’s plans at the end of last season, and he insisted he was disappointed with how his time at Stamford Bridge ended.

Asked how he felt upon his return to Madrid, he beamed: “I’m delighted.

“It has taken too long, but has had a happy ending.

“Now I’m looking forward to seeing my team-mates and training.

“This is not how I wanted things to end at Chelsea, I had a good relationship with the people there.

“I’m not the type of person who would have wanted to leave in that way.

“But I wanted to return. I was happy at Chelsea, who are also a big club, but Atletico is my home.”

Costa is expected to be revealed to fans before today’s game against Sevilla.
