Simone Zaza’s West Ham record reads: played 11, scored 0.
The Italy striker even fired a blank against Accrington Stanley and Liechtenstein during his time in east London.
But this season he’s a different man.
Zaza signed a permanent deal to join Valencia in the summer, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Only Lionel Messi has scored more league goals than the 26-year-old this season.
And, look away now West Ham fans, three of those goals came in nine minutes last night.
Yep, it took Zaza just nine minutes to score a hat-trick against hapless Malaga during a 5-0 rout at the Mestalla.
Zaza’s goals came between the 54th and 63rd minute of the game as Valencia maintained their unbeaten start to the La Liga season that has seen them take points of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
But while it might have been quick, it was utterly pedestrian compared to Kevin Gameiro’s effort last season.
Gameiro took just four minutes and 51 seconds to score three times for Atletico against Sporting Gijon in February.
Even that wasn’t as fast as David Villa’s treble against Athletic Bilbao in 2006 which was four seconds quicker.
But, considering Zaza couldn’t score once in 11 games, three in nine minutes is impressing stuff.
Did West Ham keep his number?
