Football is truly the world’s game.
A prime example could be found in the Europa League last night as Portuguese side Vitoria SC hosted Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg in a 1-1 draw.
Vitoria became the first team in the history of the competition to field a starting XI without any European players in it.
Vitoria finished fourth in the Primeira Liga last season, behind the traditional giants of Benfica, Sporting CP and Porto.
Their eclectic XI came from every corner of the globe to share the pitch at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques.
Four of the side- goalkeeper Douglas Jesus, defenders Jubal Rocha and Pedro Henrique and striker Raphina- were born in Brazil.
They were joined by another five South Americans, Uruguayan striker David Texeira, Colombian midfielders Sebastian Rincon and Guillermo Celis, Peruvian midfielder Paolo Hurtado and Venezuelan defender Victor Garcia.
Ghana’s Alhassan Wakaso lined up in midfield and defender Ghislain Konan completed the XI having been born roughly 3,600 miles away in Ivory Coast.
They don’t call it the world’s game for nothing.
Alvaro Morata or Alexandre Lacazette? Why not both in this weekend’s big game?
