Some injuries go down in footballing folklore.
Santiago Canizares missing World Cup 2002 after dropping aftershave on his foot. Rio Ferdinand straining his knee watching TV. Darius Vassell drilling through his own toe nail.
While Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio’s latest fitness troubles might not be as strange as those, it’s still a runaway leader for the coveted ‘Most Bizarre Injury of the Season’ award.
The 21-year-old wont be playing for Real Madrid as they kick off their Champions League campaign against Apoel Nicosia at the Bernabeu tonight.
Asensio has picked up an infection after shaving his legs, which left him unable to pull up his socks.
Before you all laugh there are scientific reasons behind footballers shaving their legs.
Many footballers wear muscle support tape, so to avoid having to effectively give themselves a wax when taking it off at the end of games they shave.
It’s also easier for the masseuse to do their jobs before and after games if the player is shaved.
But we doubt Asensio is getting much sympathy from his Madrid team-mates at the moment.
After all, Cristiano Ronaldo has been shaving his legs for more than a decade and you never see him missing games with ‘pimples’.
If ever there was a time for Gillette to come swooping in and offer Asensio a deal, it’s now.
