According to the dictionary a captain should be a powerful and influential person in a particular field.
Tonight’s field is football, Old Trafford to be specific.
But why have we got the dictionary out again? Because Jose Mourinho has shocked everyone with his pick to lead Man United in their Champions League clash with Basel.
Michael Carrick, United’s club captain, was only deemed worthy of a place on the bench by Mourinho.
But with club stalwarts Juan Mata, Ashley Young, David De Gea, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling in the first eleven he wasn’t short of options.
However Mourinho shocked everyone by handing Paul Pogba the armband- the first time the Frenchman will start as captain.
United last played Champions League football during the 2015/16 season, when they had to qualify through a play-off round.
That campaign ended in the group stages following losses to PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsburg.
Mourinho’s decision definitely caught United fans off guard.
But Pogba has been one of United’s best players in their unbeaten start to the season, striking up a strong partnership with Nemanja Matic.
With two goals and two assists in four Premier League games he’s been one of United’s best creative outlets.
We’d still say he should have given it Giggsy ’til end of the season though.
