Jose Mourinho ‘disappointed’ after youngster decided to leave club on loan

Jose Mourinho said he's 'disappointed' that Andreas Pereira decided to leave on loan to Valencia rather that fight for a first-team place

You should never judge a book by its cover and you should never judge a footballer by pre-season.

Andreas Pereira was one of Man United’s most impressive players in the warm up to the Premier League season, earning plenty of praise from fans after dominating Real Madrid.

But after failing to make the squad for any of United’s opening three Premier League games, the youngster headed to Valencia on a season-long loan.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that was Jose Mourinho’s choice.

But, speaking ahead of United’s clash with Stoke, it sounds like Mourinho wanted to have the 21-year-old around.

Mourinho said: “It can be considered a decision of a player who isn’t ready to fight for something difficult. I’m disappointed.”

Pereira spent last season on loan at La Liga side Granada, playing for a portion of the season under Tony Adams.

Despite Granada finishing bottom of La Liga and being relegated Pereira impressed, scoring five goals.

He’ll now have to do the same at Valencia although it doesn’t sound like Mourinho will be too keen on having him back.

Valencia were busy in the summer transfer market, also signing Simone Zaza, Gabriel, Neto, Fabian Orellana, Nemanja Maksimovic, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Jeison Murillo and Goncalo Guedes.

The wholesale changes seem to be doing the job, with Valencia opening their La Liga campaign with a 1-0 win against Las Palmas and a draw against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

No pressure then, Andreas.
