Philippe Coutinho will refuse to play for Liverpool during their Champions League run this season as he continues to set his sights on a move to Barcelona in January.
The Brazilian midfielder really had his heart set on joining the Spanish giants this summer – and according to Catalan-based outlet Sport – he will sit out of the Reds’ European games so he is not cup-tied to play for Barca in the competition after the turn of the year.
If the claims are true, then Coutinho will not play against Sevilla, Spartak Moscow or Maribor in Liverpool’s Champions League group, to keep himself eligible to play for Barca in the knockout round should he make the move to Spain.
The playmaker is yet to feature for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, but did play for Brazil recently – and even netted against Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier.
Sources for Sport say: “Coutinho – together with his family – analyses what measures he is going to take, thinking about his career plan.
“He feels under appreciated by everyone at Anfield and is unwilling to turn the page of the summer he has lived.”
Barcelona saw numerous attempts to sign the player rebuffed by Liverpool in the final days of the summer window, with their final offer reaching a whopping £138million.
Liverpool are up against Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday and it remains to be seen whether Coutinho will play any part in the game.
