The Anfield legend was answering questions from fans on BT Sport alongside Steve McManaman when he revealed his admiration for Nemanja Matic.

When asked which United player he’d have at Liverpool, Gerrard responded with: “Right now? Looking at the weekend, I’d take Matic.

“We haven’t got a natural holding midfielder at the moment.

“Jordan Henderson has done a fantastic job in there, obviously struggles with injury at times. We’ve got Emre Can as well, but for me, they’re suited as well to being No.8s.

“I think all them players would benefit from having a real big monster of a midfielder in there who can break up play; that can help secure Liverpool when they pile forward.

“I’m a huge fan of Matic and looking at him over the weekend, he looks like the right piece of the puzzle that [Jose] Mourinho needs.”

Many pundits and fans have questioned whether Liverpool’s defence are up to the task of a title challenge but Gerrard believes a defensive midfielder would solve that issue.

Already the signing of Matic looks to be an inspired one with Paul Pogba and Juan Mata flourishing in midfield this season with the gigantic Serbian as a reliable insurance policy behind them.

Gerrard’s expert assessment of Emre Can is interesting as many would consider him a holding midfielder.

However, Stevie G believes the German international is best utilised as a box-to-box midfielder and it’s hard to argue.

Can’s brace against Hoffeheim in Champions League qualifying was further proof of his ability in the final third as well as his combative nature in the middle of the part.

Gini Wijnaldum is similar while Jordan Henderson’s defensive qualities aren’t quite on par with his attributes when in possession.

Emre Can has become a key player for Liverpool in the last year

Given that Jurgen Klopp has been desperate to sign Virgil van Dijk in recent months, many would perhaps have selected someone like Eric Bailly to add to Liverpool’s squad when faced with such a question.

Or David De Gea perhaps?

Mind you, it’s probably best to assume Gerrard knows best.

Oh, if you’re wondering what this monstrosity is, it’s because Gerrard once admitted to wearing a United shirt with Bryan Robson’s name on the back. Just ignore it and it’ll go away
