Kylian Mbappe’s dad stopped Man United from re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer

Jose Mourinho would have been reunited with CR7 if it weren't for Mbappe senior

Kylian Mbappe’s dad may well be the new pantomime villain among Man United fans.

The Sunday Times claim that Jose Mourinho was closer than many thought to being reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo this summer but the move fell apart when Mbappe junior turned down Real Madrid in favour of PSG.

The Monaco wonderkid is a huge fan of Ronaldo, his room as a kid was decorated with dozens of posters of the Portuguese star, and was keen on a switch to the Bernabeu.

However, Mbappe’s dad thought signing for Real Madrid would be detrimental to his teenage son’s development.

Perhaps because he would have to fight for a place in the starting line-up with the likes of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Isco, Marco Asensio and Ronaldo himself.

Following his dad’s advice, the 18-year-old agreed to a loan move to PSG with a view to signing permanently next summer.

The end result of this is that Real Madrid were not prepared to allow Ronaldo to return to United.

The 32-year-old Ballon d’Or holder had reportedly expressed a desire for a move back to Old Trafford after the public scandal surrounding his tax issues.

Zinedine Zidane was very keen to recruit Mbappe but would have required the funds from selling Ronaldo to complete the deal.

So then, we can say within reason that had Mbappe’s dad approved a move to Madrid, Ronaldo would have been wearing the No7 shirt for United this season, if the report is to be believed.

The impact that would have had on the Premier League title race we can only guess at but we all know what he’s capable of — Ronaldo has averaged 53 goals a season over the last seven years.

Curse you, papa Mbappe, you denied the Premier League a reunion with arguably its most talented son.
