Chelsea have admitted they actually want to sign Kieran Gibbs instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsenal accepted a £40m offer for the midfielder on Monday night, only for the Blues’ scouting department – now fronted by referee Andre Marriner – to soon become aware of their blunder.
Marriner was bizarrely appointed in his new role just hours before the mix up occurred on Monday.
The former Premier League official has previous between the two players, having sent Gibbs off for a deliberate handball offence committed by Oxlade-Chamberlain during a 6-0 defeat to Chelsea in March 2014.
And it appears history has repeated itself again in 2017.
Lee Satchell, Chelsea’s avocado slicer, revealed Marriner is ‘gutted’ and has spent hours playing the board game ‘Guess Who’ in an attempt to improve his identity problems.
“Andre is gutted about the mistake,” said Satchell.
“He’s been torturing himself for years over that incident at Stamford Bridge and for it to happen again will really knock him back.
“He said it was a 50/50 call between the two players and he got it wrong again.
“To be honest I have no idea why the club hired him in the first place.”
Marriner has also since admitted he approached Gail Platt last week after mistaking the Coronation Street actress for Luka Modric.
