Meho Besic was shot in the hand and the leg following a dispute in Bosnia and was in hospital while the Premier League game took place.

The full extent of his injuries are unknown though they are not though to be life-threatening.

24-year-old Bosnian international Besic was brought on at half-time during Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Ronald Koeman said of the situation: “When I spoke to him, he said before the game he was ready and committed.

“I spoke to him yesterday evening. He spoke to his father. I don’t like to talk in more detail. This is a family matter.

“We will see what happens after the game. I don’t know exactly what happened, but what came out in the papers is true.”

We wish Besic senior a speedy recovery while Besic junior’s dedication to his club must be commended.
