Cristiano Ronaldo names six players he thinks could succeed him

Cristiano Ronaldo was speaking after being named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year

It’s time to talk about life after Cristiano Ronaldo.

At 32 he’s no spring chicken and while he’s probably got the fitness to play till he’s 51, there’s going to be a time when he’s no longer around to score double hat-tricks against Alaves.

But who’s going to take his place? Let’s ask the man himself.

Ronaldo was asked who he sees following in his footsteps after being named the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

The Real Madrid forward responded: “That is a very good question.

“I see some with great potential. Marco Asensio, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Ousmane Dembele, Eden Hazard, Marcus Rashford, and some others.

“In the next generation there are at least 10 players with very, very great potential.”

Of course Ronaldo has already seen up close what Asensio has to offer, with the 21-year-old Spaniard quickly establishing himself as one of the best young midfielders in Europe.

And Ronaldo will be getting a chance to test himself against Dembele after the Frenchman closed in on a move to Barcelona, where he’ll have to try and fill Neymar’s boots.

The mention of Rashford will be especially pleasing to England and Man United fans.

The 19-year-old scored more goals in his first two seasons at Old Trafford than Ronaldo did in the same time period, despite playing far fewer games.

Just imagine what his stats would look like if Jose Mourinho actually played him up front once in a while.
