In a few years’ time we may look back at it as the moment football descended into complete madness without hope of recovery or we may see it as the final straw in prompting a worldwide reevaluation of the sport’s finances.
Only time will tell.
In the short term though, it’s Premier League champions Chelsea who are the unexpected victims of the £198million deal.
French outlet L’Equipe are reporting that Antonio Conte was keen on adding PSG midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak to his squad before the deal fell through.
Apparently negotiations stalled between the two clubs once the dream of signing Neymar became a reality.
The Ligue 1 club redirected all the resources to the Neymar deal, making it their top priority and dropping everything else in the process.
PSG’s silent treatment understandably annoyed Chelsea who then ended their pursuit of the Poland international and switched their attentions to Tiemoue Bakayoko.
Conte is also said to be interested in signing Leicetser’s Danny Drinkwater though the clubs’ valuations differ by approximately £10million.
Seems rather unprofessional of PSG, not that they’ll be too bothered now Neymar is their new No10.
27-year-old Krychowiak featured in just 11 league games last season and is one of the players up for sale with Unai Emery trying to thin out his squad.
“He’s a quality player who can play in a very good team,” Emery said.
“But at PSG, players must be capable of crossing an additional step to adapt to the play of the team. It’s not the same as at other teams.
“So it’s better he finds another team where the play is better suited to him.”
