After a few years at Manchester United where his credentials were severely questioned, a romantic return to boyhood club Everton materialised over the summer.
And it got off to the best possible start on Saturday.
Rooney started the Toffees’ first Premier League game of the season against Stoke at Goodison Park and scored the winner in the 1-0 win.
The ex-England captain capped a fine team move with a clinical header – a sight rarely seen in recent times.
