Roberto Firmino can’t name a single No. 9 from Liverpool’s history

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino seemingly can't remember a single illustrious wearer of one of Liverpool's most iconic shirts

Roberto Firmino is Liverpool’s new number 9.

Which is a pretty big deal on Merseyside, as you know.

The Brazilian forward has taken over the iconic number, having passed his No. 11 shirt over to new signing Mo Salah, who incidentally is responsible for the best fantasy football team name of 2017.

But it seems the man himself doesn’t have as full an understanding of the history and tradition of that great jersey as he might have.

YOU CAN STILL PICK YOUR FANTASY TEAM, IT’S NOT TOO LATE!

He’s spoken out in an interview with The Times this weekend to explain the special affinity Brazilians have for the shirt.

He said: “The shirt was free and I was asked if I wanted it. It — No 9 — is a special number for Brazilians and I like it too, so I changed the number myself.”

All makes sense so far. But given the reverence he has for the shirt and the absolute icons who’ve worn the shirt at Anfield, you’d have thought he’d then have moved on to reel off all the legendary names who inspired his decision.

What do you reckon he’s listening to?

What do you reckon he’s listening to?

But no.

He went on: “I’ve heard of other No 9s that have played here and I’m always willing to help my team by trying to score goals so we can win games. I’ll do my best to make my game successful.”

Other No. 9s?

OTHER NO. 9s?

One of Liverpool’s ‘other’ number nines

Is that how you treat the memory of such Merseyside luminaries as Ian Rush, Ian St. John, Steve Heighway and (dare we say) Fernando Torres.

By lumping them in with the likes of Iago Aspas, Christian Benteke and Rickie Lambert.

Well that’s just charming.

Back to LFC history lessons for you mate.
