WEST HAM have made a £27.1million bid to sign Sporting Lisbon’s midfield star William Carvalho.
The Hammers are prepared to smash their club record for a second time this summer to capture the highly-rated Portugal midfielder.
Club officials are currently in Lisbon attempting to thrash out a deal for the Euro 2016 winner – who has long been a target for sides in the Premier League.
Sporting are trying to hold out for as much as £36m before sanctioning the move, but the Hammers are hopeful of winning the battle over fees with Carvalho keen to move to England.
The 25-year-old has remained loyal to his club in recent years despite interest from a number of top flight sides including Manchester United and Everton.
But now it appears he finally wants to secure the move to the Premier League and West Ham believe he is keen to join them at the London Stadium.
The Hammers are not prepared to meet the full Sporting asking price but the club are quietly confident they will reach an agreement before the end of the week.
If they manage to clinch his signing it would round off an impressive summer of transfer activity by the East London club.
Manager Slaven Bilic has clinched the signings of Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta from Manchester City, along with former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez.
Marko Arnautovic's £24.5m capture from Stoke is the current club record fee paid out, and earlier this week the Hammers also beat a number of sides to promising youngster Sead Haksabanovic.
Club bosses are confident their signings this summer will work out much better than the business they conducted 12 months ago.
Gokhan Tore, Jonathan Calleri, Simone Zaza and Havard Nordtveit have all been moved on less than a year after they arrived.
And West Ham are still hoping to offload two more of their last season recruits, with Sofiane Feghouli close to a £4.5m switch to Galatasaray and Robert Snodgrass targeted by Aston Villa.
