Riddle me this. Ligue 1 side Rennes have smashed a club transfer record without even having to sell a player.
Ousmane Dembele’s £138million move from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona has resulted in handshakes all round in Rennes’ boardroom.
Rennes are owed 25% of any transfer fee Dortmund make from selling Dembele, according to Mundo Deportivo.
So of the £138mil fee Dortmund held out for, Rennes have netted a hefty £34.5mil.
Records are made to be broken.
Rennes’ record sale previously stood at £13.5m, when Yann M’Vila move to Russian Premier League side Rubin Kazan.
Dembele’s £10.8m move to Dortmund was the club’s second biggest sale while Asamoah Gyan’s £9.9m transfer to Sunderland was the third.
So Rennes have more than doubled their record sale without having to lift a finger.
Dembele is the latest player off Rennes’ academy production line that is also responsible for the talents of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Yoann Gourcuff.
Christian Gourcuff’s side, who finished ninth in Ligue 1 last season, kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw with Troyes, followed up by a loss to Lyon and a draw against Dijon.
But the manager will have nothing to worry about thanks to the massive windfall coming his way, apart from cramping up from all the cheques he’ll be writing out.
Actually, what are we on about, £34.5m can hardly buy you a left leg these days.
