What a way to end pre-season.
Arsenal emerged victorious in the Community Shield penalty shootout over London rivals Chelsea at Wembley.
Olivier Giroud slammed home the winning penalty but it was Thibaut Courtois who provided all the drama.
The Chelsea keeper was the surprise choice to take the Blues’ second penalty in the new ABBA format.
The Belgian stopper stepped up after Gary Cahill, Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal had all converted their spot kicks.
Courtois struck his penalty as if it was another routine goal kick, sending the ball rocketing out of London towards somewhere with considerably weaker 4G.
The ultra competitive Antonio Conte struggled to hide his disappointment when new signing Alvaro Morata then drilled his effort wide of the bottom corner.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain kept his cool before Giroud punished Courtois and Morata by powering home the winning penalty.
During normal time, new cult hero Sead Kolasinac headed home Arsenal’s equaliser eight minutes from time from a free-kick which came about from a nasty tackle from Pedro for which the Spaniard was dismissed.
Victor Moses had given Chelsea the lead after Granit Xhaka’s poor clearance and Hector Bellerin’s lack of awareness.
The Community Shield is regarded as merely a bonus by most fans but the victory will help Arsenal start their Premier League campaign with confidence.
As for Courtois, his calamitous effort may leave him rattled as Chelsea start their title defence at home to Burnley on Saturday.
It was funny though, you have to admit.
