FORGET 4-4-2

Man United v Sampdoria had two bizarre passages of play only seen in pre-season

Sampdoria lined up with a 1-1-8 formation from kick-off and Man United put everyone on the line to defend a free-kick. Only in pre-season

Pre-season is a wonderful time.

Champions League calibre matches played in unfamiliar venues in front of new crowds. What’s not to love?

Man United took on Sampdoria in Dublin and the game wasted little time in living up to its pre-season reputation. Just take a look how Sampdoria lined up from the kick-off.

Nope, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. That is a 1-1-8 formation from the notoriously defensive Italians.

Unfortunately Sampdoria’s unorthodox start didn’t come to anything as the defender lumped the ball straight to Chris Smalling.

But the fun wasn’t over there. Daley Blind’s horribly misplaced pass was heading straight into United’s goal before David De Gea swooped to save his blushes.

From the resulting free-kick United put every outfield player on the goal-line.

You reckon we’ve got enough back here?

This time the tactics did pay off.

United’s wall stood strong and the resulting break ended in Matteo Darmian crossing for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to make it 1-0.

Two bizarre pieces of play in under ten minutes. We love this game.

Unfortunately the Premier League season starts in less than a fortnight, so get your fill of 1-1-8 formations and 10-men goal-line heroics while you can.
