Freddy Adu’s horror-show of a career continues as he joins newly-promoted Polish club Sandecja Nowy Sacz

The journeyman once dubbed "the next Pele" has joined Sandecja against the managers wishes

For years to come, the name Freddy Adu will be used as a warning to any young player with tons of potential and not much else.

The ultimate name in wasted talent, the Messiah of Championship Manager and the kid everyone said would become one of the best.

Once regarded as one of the world’s brightest young talents, Adu became the youngest American ever to sign a major league professional contract at the age of 14, and was even dubbed “the next Pele” by the Brazilian legend.

No pressure, then?

NOT PICKED YOUR FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM YET? WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

It didn’t quite go to plan though.

Now aged 28, Adu is currently on globe-trotting horror-show of a career which has seen him play for 13 different clubs in some of the very depths of the footballing pyramid in countries as diverse as Portugal, Serbia, Turkey, Brazil and Finland.

Club No 14 is seemingly on the horizon, with Polish side Sandecja Nowy Sacz the latest to be added to his CV, after the newly-promoted club announced the American was joining them for a trial period via Twitter.

However, Sandecja manager Radoslaw Mroczkowski didn’t have much to do with the decision to sign the player, and has publicly criticised the club for the allowing him to join.

Speaking to Polish website Sportowefakty.pl, Mroczkowski  said: “It’s a joke.

“I read in the media about his trial. I asked the sporting director why he did not tell me anything.

“After all, he sent me a text message that there ‘will be a player on trial’ and that’s they all knew.

“Marketing knew, the staff at the club knew… only the coach did not know who the trialist was.”

“What is the point of having such a player? The CEO says that it’s marketing.”

Not a great start to his career in Poland, then?
