Sebastian Giovinco should be a shining example to all average forwards slogging it out in Europe.
The 30-year-old spent nine seasons in Italy, playing for Juventus, Empoli and Parma, without ever really leaving his mark.
But, after just three years in Major League Soccer, he’s already a league record holder.
Giovinco’s strike in Toronto’s 4-0 win against New York City FC saw him take the record for the most amount of goals from direct free-kicks.
His tenth free-kick was part of a double which takes him to a pleasingly even 50 goals in 78 games.
Want to see it? Of course you do.
To put Giovinco’s efforts in some context, David Beckham scored seven free-kicks in the five years he spent playing for LA Galaxy.
Jeff Larentowicz and Javier Morales- names that will only be familiar to hardcore MLS fans- were the players Giovinco moved clear of the hold the record outright.
So is Giovinco the best to ever play in the MLS? Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore might have something to say about that.
